Tired of people-pleasing?

“A Rebel Writer” shows that being free is being whole, not perfect

Phil Headway uses autofiction to break labels and defend your right to change your mind, your genre, and yourself without asking permission

The prison of the label

Drake Kataroyan sold millions with historical romance. The audience claps, critics call him a “novelist”, the publisher wants more of the same. But inside, he’s suffocating.

In “A Rebel Writer”, Headway puts this character – who is him, who isn’t him – against the wall and asks the question everyone avoids: what if you don’t want to be just one thing for the rest of your life?

Write how you think, not how they tell you to

Headway dropped perfect grammar and polished dialogue. He wrote the way he talks. Massive paragraphs to test who skips reading. Breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to you. Absurd scenes from everyday life – mites in the mattress, a game of pool, a sneeze that knocks people over at the movies – mixed with philosophical punches about love, the body, and judgment.

Why? Because being free is tiring. Being free takes work. Being free means putting up with people calling you a “lazy piece of shit” just because you didn’t read fast like everyone else.

Drake sums it up in one word: “Relationships”. But it’s not about couples. It’s about your relationship with yourself when you stop performing to please others.

The biggest rebellion is not apologizing for changing

The book pokes where it hurts: we were trained to fit in a box. Born to be John, became Drake. Baptized as a novelist, but wants to write about life, which has every genre. Loved one way, now wants to love freely – no possession, no anxiety, no expectations.

And the most rebellious part? He doesn’t ask for permission. He doesn’t write a little “sorry if I changed” note. He just changes. Because understanding is freedom. And freedom isn’t up for negotiation.

In the end, Headway doesn’t deliver a plot twist. He delivers life. Sometimes straight, sometimes boring, sometimes chaos. But always yours.

Who this is for

If you’ve ever pretended to like something so you wouldn’t disappoint. If you’ve ever swallowed “this is just how I am” so you wouldn’t have to explain. If you’re tired of being the shortened version of who you are…

This book is a slap in the face and a hug at the same time. It reminds you that the real rebel isn’t the one who shouts the loudest. It’s the one who lives by what they believe and still pushes the people around them to do the same.

As Drake says: love is only real when it’s free. And you’re only whole when you stop asking permission to exist.
